(No one has to agree with me but I prefer that this forum remains un-spammed and debate free. Also Spoiler Alert!)
As many of you might know by now Halo Nightfall Episode 5 AKA the finale came out and I have to say that it ended on a high note. At first I was very unsure of how this series would turn out when I first saw the trailer but now after watching the whole thing from beginning to end my unsureness disappeared.
Story:
Much like "Forward Unto Dawn" the story was relatively short and there were many questions still unanswered. At first I figured the story would be that Locke and his team go on the ring and search for the deposits and maybe have deaths here and there and then a quick getaway. But that was not case here, the drama escalated and soon the mission then became a desperate race for survival with everyone showing their true colors and becoming complete savages. I really enjoyed the story even though it started slow and the final episode truly grips at the emotions tied to characters like Aiken. Stories of true survival are one of my favorites and this certainly adds to my collection.
Characters:
I was a little disappointed that some of the origin stories of certain characters like Locke and Aiken were not expanded upon but then again "Forward Unto Dawn" had a similar issue. However as the series progressed the characters improved as their true natures started to appear and the blandness started going away. Locke and Aiken were truly the two highlights of this series showing off their true beliefs and personalities as things got worse around them. Both Locke and Aiken knew that when things get bad one of them would not make it through the night. And also with the fact that Aiken distrust ONI and Locke distrusting the UNSC made them butt heads a lot during the series but when it came near the end the two realized that it was no longer about government or past demons... That it was about surviving and completing the mission. As for Agent Jameson Locke... At first I found him to be a bit of a bland generic character but then again Master Chief seemed to be the same before his story was expanded upon. Part of Locke's back story has been revealed in the archives and it shows that Locke is a much more complex character than what many people perceived him to be. By around Episode 3 Locke's personality started to show itself.... He showed that he was loyal, determined, master of strategy and operations, and is willing to sacrifice himself for the good of others. In the finale he even 'Volunteered' himself to stay behind to detonate the bomb due to how he saw that it was his operation and his fault for letting down the team. And even when things got desperate he still kept to his promise of leaving no one behind... That is a sign of true leadership and can be greatly compared to Master Chief's personality. I hope that in Halo 5 we get to see more of his personality unfold.
The Enemy:
I know most people were looking forward to seeing possible Prometheans or a forerunner threat of some kind but I felt that the Lekgolo AKA Hunter Worms were a great enemy. For the many years we have played Halo we have been used to seeing the Hunters as giant walking tanks of the covenant that we always had tough times dealing with. But what happens if the Hunters were not under the control of the covenant and were in their natural state? We never had a good look at what the Worms true potential and abilities as a hive mind can do. To be pursued by a relentless hungering enemy such as these beasties seems way better than that typical covenant or forerunner robots. How they got there remains a mystery but I would be very interested if in Halo 5 they could make the hunters be in a swarm form.
The Verdict:
Even though Nightfall had its hitches I thought it was a brilliant series and I look forward to seeing how the story of Agent Locke expands in Halo 5. From 1-10 10 being the highest..... 8/10
